Punjab Kicks Off Census 2027 Preparations with Key Meeting in Chandigarh
In a big step towards India’s next big count, the Punjab State Level Census Coordination Committee held its first meeting on Tuesday in Chandigarh. Chief Secretary KAP Sinha led the session at the Punjab Civil Secretariat, where officials reviewed plans for the upcoming Census 2027 operations.
Top leaders from departments like Local Government, Revenue, Rural Development & Panchayats, Planning, Finance, and School Education joined in. Deputy Commissioners and Municipal Commissioners tuned in through video calls from across the state.
The meeting named the Additional Chief Secretary of Local Government as the main nodal officer to handle all Census-related work in Punjab. Dr. Navjot Khosa, Director of Census Operations for Punjab, kicked things off with a clear rundown on how the Census process works, the legal rules, key preparations, and the full Census calendar.
Everyone talked about important stuff like guidelines from the Census Directorate, how to classify rural and urban areas, ideas around urban growth and agglomerations, mapping challenges, and the soon-to-start Pre-Test for the Digital Census 2027. This test will happen in Jalandhar, Amritsar, and Malerkotla districts.
Chief Secretary Sinha urged Deputy Commissioners and Municipal Commissioners to team up fully for a hassle-free Census. He told them to wrap up jurisdictional setups, set up dedicated Census Cells in districts and corporations, and follow every guideline from the Directorate of Census Operations to the letter. He made it clear: all administrative boundaries need to be locked in by December 31, 2025.
Sinha gave special nods to the Deputy Commissioners of Amritsar and Malerkotla, plus Jalandhar’s Municipal Commissioner, asking them to gear up early for the Digital Census pre-test activities.
The chat wrapped up with a strong push for teamwork and careful planning to make Census 2027 a success in Punjab. Everyone got a nudge to focus on their tasks and hit deadlines for smooth prep work.
