Gold coins to cars, India witnesses record-breaking festive sales

India’s holiday season is delivering a retail boom, with record‑breaking sales across auto, gold, silver, electronics and home appliances. Strong demand and the latest GST 2.0 reforms are driving this surge.

On Dhanteras, the All‑India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) said gold and silver sales jumped more than 25 % in value. “We expect festive sales to cross ₹50,000 crore,” said GJC chairman Rajesh Rokde. He added that a sharp price correction on gold has kept consumer sentiment high. Gold coins and lightweight, hallmark‑certified jewelry were the biggest hits, while silver coins and puja items rose nearly 40 % from last year. Rokde also noted a 15 % increase in self‑purchase buying, especially among younger shoppers looking for responsibly sourced, lightweight pieces to mark personal milestones.

The auto sector is feeling the festive lift too. Tata Motors’ Chief Commercial Officer Amit Kamat said deliveries during Dhanteras and Diwali are now spread over two to three days, matching the auspicious muhurats. “Demand has been robust, and GST 2.0 gives us momentum,” he said. “We expect to deliver over 25,000 vehicles in this period.” Hyundai Motor India’s COO Tarun Garg echoed the optimism, projecting about 14,000 deliveries—roughly 20 % more than last year.

Overall, the festive mood, a healthy market environment, and GST 2.0 changes are helping India achieve one of the strongest holiday retail seasons recently. According to the CAIT, total trade on Dhanteras exceeded ₹1 lakh crore, with gold and silver alone pulling more than ₹60,000 crore in sales. Delhi markets recorded transactions over ₹10,000 crore as demand for locally made products surged.

The trend shows that Indian consumers are not only buying gifts but also investing in durable goods, and that the government’s tax reforms are keeping the economy moving.
