Delta passenger cries after catching glimpse of seatmate’s body-shaming text: ‘I feel like a prisoner’

A Delta Airlines flight taking off from Tampa to New York started off oddly quiet until the passenger seated beside Vanessa began shaking her head. Vanessa, who’s been sharing her life and her journey of dropping over 60 pounds on TikTok under the name “soberspouse,” was silently sobbing when she noticed the man’s phone on the seatback. He had just sent “urgh HUGE woman sat next to me” to a friend, and the harsh words felt almost audible beside her. She filmed herself tearing up to a remix of “Jump Around,” posting the clip on the platform, and then followed up with another video describing how difficult it was to fly “while fat” and that she “was wiped out” by the incident. The flight itself seemed routine thereafter, but Vanessa later detailed the encounter in an interview with The Mary Sue. She recalled spotting the man’s weary sigh and eye-rolls the moment she settled in, and that he tried to wipe the offensive text away by sending “a series of empty texts” to push it out of sight. A separate TikTok dropped a day later clarified that the man was actually “spilling more into [her] seat,” and it seemed she didn’t need two seats after all. Since the story first went live on November 26, the video has racked up over a million views and 121,000 likes, attracting a wave of body‑positive supporters. Vanessa expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of kindness, saying the “little moment of lemons” had turned into “so much lemonade” for many, and that the response had restored her faith in humanity.
