Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has thrown his support behind U.S. President Donald Trump’s bold new Middle East peace plan. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Carney praised the plan as a historic step forward and called on all sides to make it work.
“Canada welcomes President Trump’s historic new Middle East peace plan, and we urge all parties to help it realize its full potential,” Carney wrote. “As the critical next step, Hamas must immediately release all hostages. Canada stands ready to support the sustained, unimpeded, and large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid into and throughout Gaza.”
Carney also stressed Canada’s commitment to teaming up with global partners. The goal? Building a lasting peace that includes a sovereign, democratic, and viable State of Palestine living securely alongside Israel.
The White House unveiled this Gaza peace plan on Monday after a key meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It aims to end the two-year Gaza conflict by turning the area into a deradicalized, terror-free zone. The focus would shift to rebuilding Gaza for its people, who have endured immense suffering.
Under the proposal, if both Israel and Hamas agree, the war stops right away. Israeli forces would pull back to agreed lines, halting all military actions like airstrikes and artillery. Battle lines stay frozen until full conditions are met for a complete withdrawal.
Key details include: Within 72 hours of Israel publicly accepting the deal, Hamas releases all hostages—both living and deceased. In return, Israel frees 250 prisoners serving life sentences, plus 1,700 Gazans detained since the October 7, 2023, attacks, including all women and children held in that period. For every set of Israeli hostage remains returned, Israel would release the remains of 15 deceased Gazans.
The plan offers amnesty to Hamas members who pledge peaceful coexistence and give up their weapons. Those wanting to leave Gaza get safe passage to other countries.
Humanitarian aid kicks in immediately upon acceptance. It matches levels from the January 19, 2025, agreement, covering infrastructure fixes for water, electricity, and sewage; hospital and bakery repairs; and equipment to clear rubble and reopen roads. Aid flows through neutral groups like the United Nations, its agencies, the Red Crescent, and other international organizations with no ties to either side. The Rafah crossing would open in both directions under the same rules as before.
This Trump peace plan has sparked hope for breaking the cycle of violence in the Israel-Palestine conflict, with Canada and others pushing for quick action on hostage release and Gaza humanitarian aid.
