FIDE World Cup 2025: Arjun Erigaisi, Wei Yi quarters heads to tiebreak; Nodirbek seals semis spot

In the FIDE World Cup 2025 quarter‑finals, India’s Arjun Erigaisi and China’s Wei Yi drew the second classical game, sending the match into a tiebreak.
Erigaisi, who had secured a fast draw with the black pieces on Monday, aimed for a win with the white side. He looked strong in the middle game, even though chess engines highlighted a bold bishop sacrifice. Erigaisi stuck with a calm queen move to d2, and Wei defended solidly, keeping the game level.
The tiebreak will start on Wednesday with Erigaisi playing the black pieces. Many expect him to be the favorite in the rapid format, given his recent form.
Other quarter‑finals are also heading to tiebreaks. Andrey Esipenko and Sam Shankland split a 37‑move game, while Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara and Javokhir Sindarov finished their 25‑move game in just 18 minutes.
The only player to advance to the semi‑finals after the two classical games is Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Yakubboev, who won the first game with white and drew the second against Germany’s Alexander Donchenko in 57 moves.
The tournament moves toward the semi‑finals, leaving fans eager for the rapid clashes.
