Citing longstanding cultural ties, PM Modi announces free tourist visas for Russian citizens

In New Delhi on December 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored how cultural bonds have long anchored India‑Russia ties. He told reporters that people‑to‑people links are a core part of the relationship and that India is soon rolling out a free 30‑day e‑tourist visa and a 30‑day group tourist visa for Russian nationals.
Speaking alongside President Vladimir Putin after a meeting at the Hyderabad House, Modi noted that for decades citizens on both sides have shared deep affection, respect, and warmth. He announced that the recent opening of two Indian consulates in Russia will make it easier for citizens to connect and strengthen mutual ties. He also recalled how, last October, hundreds of thousands of devotees in Kalmykia received the blessings of sacred Buddha relics at the International Buddhist Forum.
Modi expressed delight at the new visa scheme, saying that increased manpower mobility will link people and create fresh opportunities. He highlighted two agreements signed that day aimed at boosting such movement, and said the countries will cooperate on vocational training, skill development, and expand exchanges among students, scholars, and athletes.
During the previous October event, a powerful display of shared spiritual heritage unfolded as the sacred relics of Lord Buddha from India drew unprecedented crowds in Kalmykia’s Golden Abode of Shakyamuni Buddha. Thousands of devotees paid homage at the Geden Sheddup Choikorling Monastery.
Just last month, on the inauguration of India’s new Consulates General in Yekaterinburg and Kazan, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that these missions will deepen bilateral engagement and herald a new phase in the relationship. He said the consulates would enhance India’s diplomatic footprint and act as a catalyst to boost trade, tourism, science, technology, and academic and cultural ties between the two nations.
