PM Modi likely to celebrate Pongal with farmers during January TN visit

Chennai, Dec 14 (LatestNewsX) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to make a three‑day trip to Tamil Nadu from 13 to 15 January, during which he is slated to join farmers in the “Pongal” festivities, according to state BJP officials. The visit arrives just before the 2026 assembly polls and is seen by the party as a strategic outreach to rural voters and a chance to reinforce Tamil cultural ties. BJP leaders say this will be the first time the prime minister stands with farmers at the harvest celebrations, underscoring the party’s commitment to Tamil heritage and agricultural concerns.

Modi’s tentative schedule includes attending the closing ceremony of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 in Rameswaram, a program aimed at deepening cultural links between Tamil Nadu and Kashi. He is also likely to participate in the final event of Thamizhagam Thalai Nimira Thamizhanin Payanam, a statewide outreach drive led by BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagenthran, which is slated for Pudukkottai. “With the assembly elections on the horizon, the prime minister’s presence at Pongal will send a strong political and cultural message,” said a senior BJP figure, adding that the trip would highlight the party’s focus on agrarian issues and its connection to Tamil traditions.

The visit is expected to dovetail with key alliance developments. Sources say the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu is likely to crystallize before Pongal, with several regional parties planning to join the coalition. During his stay, Modi will likely meet NDA leaders to finalize electoral strategy and coordination for the upcoming polls. The BJP is currently negotiating with parties such as the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), and expelled AIADMK leader O. Panneerselvam. Insider reports indicate efforts are underway to conclude these talks ahead of the prime minister’s arrival.

V.K. Sasikala, a close aide of former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, is also reportedly in talks with the NDA, though she is barred from contesting elections. While she cannot stand for office, she is expected to work behind the scenes to support the alliance. Meanwhile, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran is in Delhi consulting with central leaders as preparations ramp up for the prime minister’s trip and the finalization of alliance and organizational matters in Tamil Nadu.
