Trump says Gaza talks ‘very successful with big players’ despite disagreement over Palestine state recognition

US President Donald Trump praised a key meeting on the Gaza crisis as a big success, even as tensions simmer over recognizing a Palestinian state. Speaking to reporters after leaving the United Nations headquarters in New York during the 80th United Nations General Assembly, or UNGA, Trump highlighted the productive talks.

“We had a very good meeting concerning Gaza,” Trump said. “It was a very successful meeting with all the big players, except for Israel. But that’s going to be next.”

In his UNGA speech, Trump pushed back hard against countries moving unilaterally to recognize a Palestinian state. He called it a dangerous reward for Hamas, the group behind deadly attacks. Trump stressed the need for a ceasefire and an end to the Gaza conflict right away.

“As if to encourage continued conflict, some of this body is seeking to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state,” Trump told world leaders. “The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists for their atrocities.”

Trump’s comments came after several European nations announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state at a UNGA summit on Monday. While mostly symbolic, the step adds pressure on Israel’s diplomatic ties. The United States hasn’t backed the move.

“Recognizing a Palestinian state would be a reward for these horrible atrocities, including October 7, even while they refuse to release the hostages or accept a ceasefire,” Trump added. He urged unity against Hamas demands, saying, “Instead of giving in to Hamas ransom demands, those who want peace should be united with one message: Release the hostages now, just release the hostages.”

Trump made the urgency clear: “We have to stop the war in Gaza immediately. We have to stop it. … We have to negotiate immediately. Have to negotiate peace. We got to get the hostages back.”

On the Palestinian side, President Mahmud Abbas delivered a strong message to Hamas and other factions during a UNGA session on the two-state solution. Speaking via video link, Abbas called for them to hand over weapons to the Palestinian Authority, saying only a unified Palestinian state can handle governance and security in Gaza.

“The state of Palestine is the only entity eligible to assume full responsibility for governance and security in Gaza,” Abbas stated. “This comes through an interim administrative committee affiliated with the Palestinian government in the West Bank and Arab and international support and participation.”

He laid out a clear vision: “Hamas and other factions must surrender their weapons to the Palestinian Authority. What we want is one unified state without weapons, a state with one law and one legitimate security force.”

Abbas tied this to recent progress, thanking nations for the New York Declaration passed by the UNGA in July. He called it a turning point toward ending the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Israel’s occupation, following international law and the Arab Peace Initiative. The declaration supports an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, living peacefully next to Israel.

Abbas demanded an immediate and lasting ceasefire, full humanitarian access via the UN, release of all hostages and prisoners, and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. He also pushed for quick rebuilding of Gaza and the West Bank at the upcoming Cairo International Conference.

“The declaration stressed that the war against our people must come to an immediate and durable end,” Abbas said. “It noted that the crimes emanating from the siege, the starvation and destruction cannot be a means of achieving security. Therefore, we call for a permanent ceasefire.”

“We need to ensure humanitarian access through the United Nations… We need to guarantee the release of all hostages and prisoners, with the withdrawal of the occupation forces from Gaza,” he continued. “We need a start without delay of Gaza and the West Bank reconstruction through the Cairo International Conference.”

Abbas condemned violence from both sides, including Israel’s actions and Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attacks that killed 1,200 people according to Israel. He also criticized Israeli settlement growth, annexation, settler attacks, and threats to holy sites, warning that Israel’s “greater Israel” push endangers Arab security and global peace. Israel’s response in Gaza has killed more than 65,000 people, reports say.
