In a big political switch in Andhra Pradesh, Marri Rajasekhar, a member of the Legislative Council, is all set to join the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) after quitting the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) back in March. This move comes amid ongoing shifts in the state’s politics following the TDP-led NDA’s victory last year.
TDP chief and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will officially welcome Rajasekhar into the party during a ceremony on Friday evening. Rajasekhar, who got elected to the Legislative Council through the MLA quota in 2023, still has four years left in his term. He announced his resignation from both YSRCP and the Council on the final day of the last legislative session in March. He even urged Council Chairman Koyye Moshenu Raju to accept it right away, but that hasn’t happened yet.
This makes Rajasekhar the fifth YSRCP MLC to jump ship since the party lost power. The others include Jayamangala Venkataramana, Pothula Sunitha, Balli Kalyan Chakravarthy, and Karri Padmashree. Coming from Guntur district, Rajasekhar has a mixed political history. He won the Chilakaluripet Assembly seat as an independent in 2004, beating TDP’s Prattipati Pulla Rao by just 212 votes. He later joined Congress but lost to Pulla Rao in 2009. In 2014, he ran on a YSRCP ticket from the same seat but faced defeat again.
Fast forward to 2019, when YSRCP picked Vidadala Rajani for Chilakaluripet—she won big and even became a minister in Jagan Mohan Reddy’s cabinet. But in 2024, the party moved her to Guntur West, where she lost. Rajasekhar wasn’t happy about YSRCP appointing the defeated Rajani as the in-charge for Chilakaluripet. When he quit, he slammed the party for ignoring his contributions and accused former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy of breaking promises.
