Indian Man’s Tragic Death in California: Family Alleges Racial Discrimination After Police Shooting
A heartbreaking incident has shaken an Indian family after a young man from Telangana was shot dead by police in California. Mohammed Nizamuddin, who had moved to the US for higher studies and work, lost his life on September 3 in Santa Clara. His family now claims racial bias played a role and is calling for a full investigation into the shooting.
According to police reports, officers rushed to Nizamuddin’s home after a 911 call about a stabbing. They found the 28-year-old holding down his roommate with a knife during a heated fight. The roommate suffered injuries in the scuffle. When police arrived, they confronted Nizamuddin, leading to an officer-involved shooting. He was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead. The roommate is receiving treatment and recovering.
The Santa Clara Police Department (SCPD) shared these details in a statement, emphasizing that the case is under joint investigation by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and local police. They promised more updates soon, but the probe remains active.
However, Nizamuddin’s family paints a different picture. They say he actually called the police himself for help before the tragic shooting. The family from Mahabubnagar, Telangana, describes him as a quiet, religious guy who kept to himself. He had completed a Master’s in Computer Science from a Florida college and worked at a tech firm in California.
What adds fuel to their racial discrimination allegations? Nizamuddin had openly shared his struggles on LinkedIn. In a post, he wrote about facing "racial hatred, racial discrimination, racial harassment, torture, wage fraud, wrongful termination, and obstruction of justice." He accused white supremacy and racist attitudes in America, even claiming his food was poisoned, he faced eviction, and a detective was spying on him. The family wants authorities to dig deep into these claims alongside the police shooting incident.
Spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan from Majlis Bachao Tehreek met Nizamuddin’s father, Mohammed Hasnuddin, and revealed that the family has reached out to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). They’ve written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, asking for help from the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Consulate General in San Francisco. Their main requests? A detailed report on the Indian man’s death in California and assistance to bring his body back to India for final rites.
This case highlights serious concerns about racial harassment faced by Indian students and professionals in the US. As the investigation unfolds, many are watching closely for justice in this police shooting tragedy. The family hopes for answers and closure amid their grief.
