Exciting news for fans of Indian cinema: Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is set to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced this honor on Saturday via their official X account (formerly Twitter).
The ministry highlighted Mohanlal’s incredible journey, saying his work as an actor, director, and producer has inspired generations. They praised his talent, versatility, and dedication, noting how he has set a high bar in Indian film history. This award recognizes his iconic contributions to the industry.
Mohanlal will pick up the award at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23, 2025. The Drishyam star kicked off his acting career at age 18 with the 1978 Malayalam drama Thiranottam, though censorship issues delayed its release by 25 years.
He made his official screen debut in 1980’s romantic drama Manjil Virinja Pookkal, playing the antagonist. Mohanlal honed his skills in villain roles and supporting parts before breaking out as a lead in the 1986 crime thriller Rajavinte Makan.
Over more than four decades, he’s starred in over 400 films, mostly in Malayalam but also in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada cinema. His versatility has made him a household name across India.
The Indian government has recognized his impact before, awarding him the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019. In 2009, Mohanlal became the first Indian actor to earn an honorary lieutenant colonel rank in the Territorial Army.
