FBI makes arrest in Jan. 6 pipe bomb investigation after nearly 5 years

A suspect was taken into custody Thursday for planting pipe bombs outside the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters on the night before the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, CNN and the Associated Press reported.

The arrest comes a month ahead of the five‑year anniversary of the incident that briefly stalled Congress’ confirmation of President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory, and it ends an embarrassing chapter for the FBI, which had been lambasted by both parties for the lack of progress in identifying the culprit.

Surveillance footage shows a person carrying a backpack while wearing a grey‑hooded sweatshirt, a mask, gloves, glasses, and Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers. The individual was placing what investigators termed “viable explosive devices” at the two party headquarters on the evening of Jan. 5, 2021.

The devices were discovered the following afternoon, around the time Congress was about to begin counting the 2020 electoral votes. The vote count was halted for several hours after President Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, breaking into the House and Senate chambers.

A report issued in January by Reps. Barry Loudermilk (R‑Ga.) and Thomas Massie (R‑Ky.) alleged that “little meaningful progress” had been made on the pipe‑bomb investigation and accused the feds of “refusing to provide substantive updates to Congress.”

The lawmakers’ report, which cited “a promising array of data and … numerous persons of interest,” also noted that “by the end of February 2021, the FBI began diverting resources away from the pipe‑bomb investigation.”

Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department responded to the Post’s request for comment.
