Chennai Metro train halts inside tunnel, commuters forced to walk on track

Chennai, Dec 2 (LatestNewsX) – A Blue Line Chennai Metro train stalled unexpectedly inside a tunnel near Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro early Tuesday morning, forcing commuters to walk almost 500 metres to reach safety after services halted abruptly. Passengers reported that the train, heading from Chennai International Airport to Wimco Nagar, came to a sudden stop between Central Metro and High Court stations, about half a kilometre from the Central Railway Station limit, deep within the underground tunnel. When the lights flickered out for a moment, the carriage became immobile, causing panicked on‑board riders to feel “trapped” for roughly ten minutes with no clear explanation.

Footage taken inside the car showed passengers gripping handrails and scanning the tunnel as they waited for updates from the control room. An ensuing announcement stated that the train could not be moved immediately and that passengers should walk to the nearby High Court station via the emergency corridor inside the tunnel. Chennai Metro Rail staff and technicians arrived shortly thereafter to facilitate the evacuation. Women and older commuters were guided carefully along the roughly 500‑metre walkway until they reached High Court Metro station, where additional staff helped manage the remaining passengers.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) later confirmed that a technical fault – possibly a momentary power interruption – caused the breakdown. Once the issue was rectified, services on the Blue Line resumed.

In an official statement posted on X, CMRL said:

“Metro train services between Airport and Wimco Nagar Depot on the Blue Line have resumed normal operation. Services between Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MG Ramachandran Central Metro and St. Thomas Mount on the Green Line are also running as per schedule. We regret the inconvenience caused.”

The incident, lasting over thirty minutes, left many morning commuters uncomfortable. Although normal operations have restarted, CMRL is conducting an internal review to pinpoint the exact cause and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
