The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has called out The Great Indian Kapil Show for using the term “Bombay” instead of “Mumbai” during episodes featuring celebrity guests. MNS leader Ameya Khopkar, who leads the party’s film wing, took to X to express his concerns and issued a stern warning to the popular comedy show hosted by Kapil Sharma.
Khopkar pointed out that some celebrity guests on the show, along with certain Delhi-based Rajya Sabha MPs, anchors, and Hindi films, continue to use “Bombay” despite the city’s name officially changing to Mumbai in 1995. He emphasized that the Maharashtra government recognized Mumbai as the official name 30 years ago, even before cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata adopted their new names.
In his post, Khopkar shared a clip from an episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show where actor Huma Qureshi mentioned her and her brother Saqib Saleem’s struggles in “Bombay” as outsiders. He urged the show to respect the city’s official name, Mumbai, calling it a “humble request-cum-warning.”
