Sylvester Stallone was nervous about working with Samuel L Jackson in ‘Tulsa King’

Sylvester Stallone got a real wake-up call when he heard Samuel L. Jackson was joining the cast of Tulsa King. The Rocky star felt the heat right away, like stepping into a boxing ring with a tough opponent.

Talking to People magazine about Season 3 of the Paramount+ hit series, Stallone shared his nerves. “When I heard that was gonna happen, I went, Oh, this is gonna be a fist fight. This is gonna be a battle,” he recalled. He pictured it as two boxers sizing each other up, wondering who would land the first punch. “You’re getting nervous because you’re dealing with serious competition,” Stallone added.

But things quickly shifted once Jackson arrived on set. Playing the ex-con Russell Lee Washington Jr. opposite Stallone’s mafia boss Dwight “The General” Manfredi, Jackson turned out to be a total ally. “Once he walks in, he goes, ‘Hey, dude brother,’ and I went, ‘Oh, here it goes.’ But now we’re good. Now we’re flowing,” Stallone said. The duo clicked so well that Stallone joked they could star in a buddy show called Tulsa King and Buddy.

Even though Tulsa King marks their first on-screen team-up, the actors have been neighbors for nearly 30 years, living just a hundred yards apart. “Yet we didn’t—you know, we’re always working. So we never really saw each other, except at Planet Hollywood-type things or openings,” Stallone explained.

Their paths in Hollywood have crossed in big ways over the years, and Stallone sees shared milestones. In a recent chat with Variety, he opened up about a wild idea for a Rambo prequel. He wants to use artificial intelligence to de-age his iconic character back to 18 years old in Saigon. “Everyone thought I was crazy,” Stallone said. “AI is sophisticated enough to go through Saigon to see him at 18 years old and basically use the same image. So it isn’t as big a stretch.”

Looking ahead, Stallone has more projects brewing. He’s set to release his memoir, The Steps, on May 5, 2026. And fans can catch him now in Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King Season 3, streaming on Paramount+.
