PM Modi’s timeless tribute: From Surat’s 2012 spotlight to Bihar’s 2025 electoral embrace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long‑standing support for Bihar has played a big part in the National Democratic Alliance’s strong showing in the recent state elections. The BJP’s 46.6 % vote share, a jump from 2020, shows how Modi’s messages about Bihar’s resilience and talent have resonated with voters, especially with the state’s many migrants living in Gujarat and other parts of India.

In late 2011, Modi, then the Chief Minister of Gujarat, gave a stirring speech in Surat that remains a key moment in the PM’s Bihar outreach. He called on the nation to “restore Bihar’s pride and dignity,” reminding listeners that many of India’s top civil servants, scientists and scholars come from the state. He slammed a “purposeful defamation” that had wrongfully painted Bihar as backward, and encouraged Bihari migrants in textile mills and the diamond trade to bring their skills back home.

The speech was echoed again in 2012 when Modi inaugurated the Bihar‑Shatabdi, a commemorative monument in Patna, and in 2022 when he unveiled a memorial to honour 100 Bihari families who had helped lift the state’s economy. Modi’s social‑media posts on X (formerly Twitter) keep echoing this theme, portraying the PM as Bihar’s ardent cheerleader.

The sentiment in Bihar’s capital, Patna, is still strong. On March 22, which marks Bihar’s independence from Bengal in 1912, Modi led a public chant for “Bihar Diwas,” celebrating the state’s heritage and the presence of Bihari migrants in the region. His voice in the video – over three minutes long – blends archival footage from 2012 with his newest remarks, encouraging the youth to “define destiny” and reclaim the state’s self‑confidence.

The results in the state’s Assembly elections underscore how that message was received. The BJP, led by Akhilesh Yadav’s NDA alliance, captured a broad base of voters, especially in the Seemanchal region where the opposition party RJD narrowly swept seat counts. Many voters said they were looking not only for jobs but also for a break from the “defamation” that had long stayed with them.

Coalition partner Tejashwi Yadav’s group, the Janata Dal (United), managed 37.9 % of the vote and 25 seats – but the BJP’s welfare promises, like the “makhana board” scheme for Dalit farmers, proved high‑impact. Nitish Kumar’s party may stand for a fifth term, yet Modi’s pledge to bring honor back to Bihar keeps resonating.

As more posts are added to the Modi Archive on X, the narrative grows clear: a political leader who saw Bihar’s light at a time when it was dimmed by negative stereotypes and brought it back to shine again.
