‘I could not believe PM Modi was calling’: Venu Deshmukh on PM’s personal outreach to Teejan Bai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled into Chhattisgarh for the state’s 25th Foundation Day and took a moment that felt more personal than official. While flag‑raising and new‑project launches filled the morning, Modi called into the home of famed folk artist Teejan Bai to check on her health.
The Padma Vibhushan awardee, who brought the Pandwani storytelling tradition to audiences worldwide, has struggled with health problems this year. During a brief phone call, Modi spoke with Venu Deshmukh, Teejan’s daughter‑in‑law. The call lasted about a minute and a half. “I hope you’re doing well, and we’re ready to help with anything you need,” Modi said, echoing earlier promises made to the family.
Deshmukh said Teejan is currently not eating solid food and is receiving soup to keep her nourished. “The Prime Minister wanted to meet her, but couldn’t for a few reasons. Today, being in Chhattisgarh, he called to see if we’re okay,” she explained. The call moved the family, who are long‑time fans of Modi. “I couldn’t believe the Prime Minister called,” she added. After the call, a team of doctors visited the home to examine Teejan and discuss her care plan.
In addition to Teejan, Modi also reached out to author Vinod Kumar Shukla to check on his well‑being. Shukla’s son recalled that the Prime Minister wanted to hear about his father’s health and expressed gratitude that a national leader would personally ask. Shukla hinted he hopes to return home in good shape, a sentiment his son, Shashwat, described as “heart‑warming.”
Meanwhile, local officials in Durg, including District Collector Abhishek Singh and the SDM, visited Teejan’s house in Ganiyari. The family shared financial difficulties and asked for help securing a government job for one of their members. Teejan, now 73, has endured the loss of her sons and delays in pension support. The state government has already offered ₹5 lakh in assistance and set up home‑care equipment.
As Chhattisgarh moves forward with its battle against Maoism, Modi’s outreach signals a continued focus on people‑centred governance. The visit underscored the Prime Minister’s commitment to supporting cultural icons, easing health struggles, and addressing local needs.
