On Saturday, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge convened a working‑committee gathering at the All‑India Congress Committee’s Indira Bhawan in New Delhi. The sit‑down, still in progress, has drawn the party’s biggest names – including Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, senior MP K.C. Venugopal, and the chief ministers of Telangana, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, as well as former MP Salman Khurshid and MPs Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Rajeev Shukla.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was also in attendance, even as his recent comments were said to diverge from the party’s official line. Harish Rawat, the chief minister of Uttarakhand, described the assembly as “very important” and, before the cameras, declared, “One cannot even imagine that in independent India, Mahatma Gandhi’s name could be removed from the MGNREGA. This is a completely unacceptable decision.”
M. Veerappa Moily told IANS that “very important issues concerning the nation will be discussed.” Sources say that the committee will set out a strategy to mobilize a mass movement against the VB G‑RAM‑G Act, while also tackling the National Herald affair, the state of the Aravalli region and other pressing political matters.
While the high‑level deliberations took place, a dozen demonstrators outside the AICC headquarters called for Karnataka’s current Home Minister G. Parameshwara to be sworn in as chief minister. They raised slogans and displayed posters urging the elevation of Dalit leadership, insisting that a Dalit chief minister should now take the helm in the state.
