Perv teacher raised money online so underage student could move in — now he has massive sentence
Cory Kapahulehua, a 44‑year‑old teacher from Mesa, Arizona, was sentenced to 187 years in prison after court found him guilty of sexual abuse and rape involving two teenage students. The victims, one 14 and the other 17, were his students at the Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center, a public charter school that specializes in agriculture and equine studies.
Kapahulehua began grooming the girls in August 2021 while they were enrolled at the school. He lured the 17‑year‑old out of her parents’ home with a promise of support, even running an online fundraiser to cover moving costs. The girl eventually moved in with him and when she turned 18, the two lived together.
The abuse did not stop when the school fired him in January 2022. Prosecutors say the assaults continued until both girls came forward, leading to his arrest in January 2023. Court records show that the sexual encounters took place on campus, in hotels, at his apartment, and in parking garages near the school.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell called Kapahulehua “a predatory teacher who used his position to exploit young students.” She praised the courage of the girls for speaking out and ensuring that no other children would be victimized by him.
In total, a jury convicted Kapahulehua on 17 child‑sex‑abuse and rape counts. The 187‑year sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes and the impact on the victims. The case has sparked renewed calls for stronger safeguards in Arizona’s charter schools and more robust reporting mechanisms for alleged abuse.
