India takes off globally: Navi Mumbai Airport to open, ICAO Re-election strengthens clout

Mumbai, Maharashtra – Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open the new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on October 8, 2025, a senior source told . The airport will turn Mumbai into a dual‑airport city, matching global powerhouses like London, New York and Tokyo and boosting India’s status in world aviation.

The 1,160‑hectare NMIA project is run through a public‑private partnership: 74 % owned by Adani Airport Holdings and 26 % by CIDCO. Its lotus‑shaped design combines Indian heritage with cutting‑edge sustainable technology, making it one of Asia’s most advanced airports.

Phase 1 will handle 20 million passengers a year with a single runway and terminal. When fully complete, NMIA will have four terminals, two runways and will raise Mumbai’s total capacity with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to 155 million passengers annually. The hub will also grow into a major cargo center, expanding from 0.5 million to 3.2 million tonnes of freight each year, powered by an automated, AI‑enabled terminal.

The airport promises more than 200,000 jobs in aviation, logistics, IT, hospitality and real estate. It will feature renewable energy, rainwater harvesting and passive cooling to keep operations green. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granted NMIA its aerodrome licence on October 1.

India’s aviation market is surging. Operational airports rose from 74 in 2014 to 163 in 2025, with a target of over 400 by 2047. Passenger traffic is set to double to 500 million by 2030, while cargo volumes could triple to 10 million tonnes, positioning India as a growing global aviation hub.

India’s influence extends beyond its borders. The country was re‑elected to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council, gathering more votes than in 2022. As a founding member since 1944, India has helped shape global safety, security and sustainability standards.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has pushed transformative reforms, major infrastructure pushes and a steadfast focus on connectivity, safety and sustainability. These advances have put India among the world’s leading aviation markets, according to .
