Chennai, Sep 29 – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin pledged Monday to roll out strict rules and safety guidelines for public events hosted by political parties and other groups, just days after a deadly stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur killed 41 people.
Stalin shared a video message on social media, explaining that the state will create a clear framework once the Justice Aruna Jagadeesan Commission of Inquiry wraps up its probe into the Karur stampede tragedy. “We all share the responsibility to set these rules for political parties and organizations running big gatherings,” he said. “After we get the commission’s report, we’ll talk with everyone involved to make sure nothing like this happens again.”
He also called on people to stay calm and skip spreading unverified rumors or fake news about the incident on social media. “I’ve seen a lot of malicious comments flying around,” Stalin noted. “No political leader wants to see their supporters or innocent folks lose their lives. To me, they’re all Tamils, no matter the party. Please, let’s avoid those irresponsible remarks.”
Describing the Karur tragedy as a “major and unprecedented” disaster, Stalin stressed that protecting human lives must always trump politics. “Let’s put aside our rivalries and focus solely on people’s safety and well-being,” he urged. Tamil Nadu, he added, has a reputation for forward-thinking policies, and the state can’t afford repeats of such heartbreaking events.
Stalin remembered rushing to Karur right after the stampede. “Even though I gave orders to the local officials, I couldn’t stay away,” he shared. “My heart felt so heavy and pained—I just had to be there in person.”
The Tamil Nadu government has already stepped up with support, offering 10 lakh rupees to each family of the victims and covering medical bills for the injured. Stalin said the next steps will follow the commission’s recommendations, and he hopes for widespread teamwork to keep future public gatherings in Tamil Nadu safe and secure.
