‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ actress Wenne Alton Davis fatally struck by NYC taxi was Customs officer hoping to retire soon: neighbors
A custom‑border officer turned part‑time actor was killed when a taxi struck her as she crossed a Midtown street. The victim, Wendy Davis—known on‑screen as Wenne Alton Davis—was a 60‑year‑old Customs and Border Protection employee at John F. Kennedy International Airport. She had been looking forward to retirement but was also an emerging actress, having appeared in a small role as a cop on the Emmy‑winning Amazon Prime series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and in other minor parts, including the 2011 film Shame.
Neighbors in Queens say she was always upbeat and welcoming. One 80‑year‑old friend shared, “She was a very bright and kind person,” and added, “She was always very active. She did sports, I believe she did rowing. She was very lively. I saw her just a few days ago and we said hello. Oh my gosh, it’s so sad, it’s so shocking, my goodness.”
Another resident of Forest Fell recalled, “She was the best, she was so nice,” and noted that even on tough days she never missed a chance to greet anyone. The neighbor explained that Davis’s work hours meant she could be seen walking out at 4 a.m. or returning at 2 a.m., “She was working towards her retirement. This is a shock.” He also mentioned that Davis lived alone with her beloved cat Roxie and had recently spent the weekend visiting her parents.
The fatal incident happened early Monday evening. Davis was nearing the intersection of Broadway and West 53rd Street when a 61‑year‑old taxi driver, driving a Cadillac, hit her during a left turn. She suffered severe head and bodily injuries and was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where she later died.
Police said the driver remained at the scene and has not yet been charged as of Wednesday. The Jersey City Customs Hockey Club paid tribute to her loss, posting on Instagram, “This heartbreaking loss is felt deeply across our entire JFK Customs family. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with Wendy’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. This tragedy has been felt throughout our brotherhood/sisterhood.”
Davis’s filmography on IMDb includes nine other acting credits beyond the Mrs. Maisel appearance. Those who knew her personally remember her as a friendly, active person who balanced a demanding job with a passion for acting, yet always kept a warm presence in the neighborhood.
