Assam Cabinet approves relocation of 10th AP Battalion, bilingual exams, Zubeen Garg memorial

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led a key cabinet meeting in Dispur on Sunday, greenlighting several important projects and support measures for the state. Among the highlights, the team approved land for a memorial to honor the late cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

The cabinet gave the go-ahead for building the 10th Assam Police Battalion at Sonapur in its first phase, with a budget of Rs 260 crore. This move aims to strengthen security in the region.

In Guwahati, the state will hand over operations of the massive 5,000-seat Jyoti Bishnu Prekhyagriha auditorium to the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra Society. The Public Works Department will keep handling day-to-day maintenance to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Support for educators got a boost too. The cabinet approved better pay, more leave options, and yearly performance reviews for 65 science and mathematics facilitators working under the Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council. These facilitators now earn Rs 34,800 per month, plus a 12.7% contribution to their provident fund. They’ll get a 5% annual raise based on appraisals, along with casual and maternity leave benefits. Plus, they qualify for the Mukhya Mantri Lok Sevak Arogya Yojana health scheme.

To make state job exams fairer for everyone, especially rural candidates, the cabinet decided to offer question papers for the Assam Public Service Commission’s Combined Competitive Preliminary Exam in both English and Assamese. This bilingual approach removes language hurdles and brings consistency. The mains exam already follows this format, though the comprehension section in General Studies Paper-II stays in English only.

Tea workers in Assam also have reason to celebrate. The cabinet approved a 20% bonus for employees under the Assam Tea Corporation ahead of the Shradiya Durga Puja festival.

Finally, officials identified a plot in Hatimura, Kamarkuchi NC Village under Panbari Mouza in Sonapur Revenue Circle, Kamrup Metro district, for Zubeen Garg’s cremation ground and memorial. His last rites are set for September 23. These decisions reflect Assam’s focus on culture, security, education, and worker welfare.
