Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin is gearing up for a big show of strength with the upcoming ‘Mupperum Vizha’ event in Karur on September 17. He calls it a grand parade of unity and determination, aimed at boosting the party’s chances in the 2026 Assembly elections while taking a strong stand against the BJP and AIADMK.
In a heartfelt letter to party workers, Stalin paints the event as a key moment to renew their dedication to the Dravidian movement’s core values. It will also highlight the DMK’s solid organizational power as the polls draw closer. He slams the BJP-led central government for eroding Tamil Nadu’s rights through unfair moves like parliamentary seat delimitation, voter list tampering, and forcing NEET on the state. As for the AIADMK, Stalin accuses them of blindly following Delhi’s lead.
This annual Mupperum Vizha marks three big milestones: the birth anniversaries of social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and former CM C.N. Annadurai, plus the DMK’s founding in September 1949. Late leader M. Karunanidhi started this three-day tradition, which includes lively debates, poetry readings, and public rallies. It also honors veteran party members with awards named after DMK legends.
This year’s celebrations kick off at 5 p.m. on September 17 along the Karur bypass road at Kodangipatti. Minister V. Senthilbalaji is overseeing the grand setup, and DMK General Secretary and senior Minister Duraimurugan will lead the proceedings. Expect speeches from party treasurer T.R. Baalu, Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru, and deputy general secretaries.
The awards lineup looks exciting. MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi gets the Periyar Award, veteran leader Subha Seetharaman receives the Anna Award, and centenarian former MLA S.M. Ramachandran bags the Kalaignar Award. Other honors go out for Bharathidasan, Perasiriyar K. Anbalagan, and M.K. Stalin categories. In a fresh twist, they’re launching the first-ever ‘Murasoli’ Selvam Journalism Award for senior journalist A.S. Panneerselvan.
Stalin has called on DMK cadres across Tamil Nadu to come together on September 15—Annadurai’s birth anniversary—to vow protecting the state’s interests. He points to the “Dravidian Model” government’s successes, like rapid economic growth and surging investments, as wins to push hard in the 2026 election campaign. With events like this, the DMK is clearly firing on all cylinders for a strong fight ahead.
