Former Uttar Pradesh minister Gayatri Prajapati landed in the hospital Tuesday after a fellow inmate attacked him inside Lucknow Prison. The scuffle happened during a cleaning shift at the jail’s medical ward, where the attacker struck Prajapati with the sliding door of a cupboard, leaving him injured.
Prajapati, who has been behind bars since his 2017 arrest on rape charges, ended up in the district jail’s hospital first. Prison officials say they treated him right away, and he’s now doing just fine. But Prajapati told a different story, calling his assailant a “vicious criminal” named Biswas, who’s been locked up for years. “It was sudden—I had no disputes with anyone,” Prajapati said. “I’m just happy my life was saved.”
Doctors later moved him to King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow for further care. His wife, Maharaji Prajapati—a Samajwadi Party MLA from Amethi—rushed to the hospital too.
The Samajwadi Party quickly voiced alarm over the Uttar Pradesh jail assault. Party leader Akhilesh Yadav took to X, urging a fair probe into the “deadly attack” on the ex-minister and MLA. “No one feels safe anywhere in UP,” he posted in Hindi.
Prison authorities are looking into the incident, but details on the attacker’s motives remain unclear. This jail violence case has spotlighted safety concerns in Uttar Pradesh prisons.
