World must fight challenges like climate change, pandemics: Lok Sabha Speaker Birla

In New Delhi on October 11, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla told delegates at the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference that India’s 75‑year experiment in democracy and equality is a global example. He said the Constitution has been the nation’s guiding light, while democracy is its soul, equality its goal and justice its identity.

The speaker was speaking to parliamentarians from the Commonwealth as the event’s theme was “The Commonwealth – A Global Partner.” He invited presiding officers of Commonwealth parliaments to the next conference of speakers, set for January 7‑9, 2026, in New Delhi.

Birla warned that crises such as climate change, pandemics, food insecurity and inequality cross borders and need joint action. He urged all members to work together, stressing that solutions cannot be found in isolation.

He highlighted India’s role in food and health security. India once relied on food imports; today it helps feed the world. During COVID‑19, India supplied medicines and vaccines to more than 150 countries, showing that health is a right, not a privilege. He noted the country’s fast‑growing economy and its status as the world’s largest democracy.

Birla also mentioned India’s environmental achievements. The nation met its Paris Agreement targets ahead of schedule and leads initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.

Women’s empowerment was another focus. Birla said that over 1.4 million of India’s 3.1 million rural representatives are women, thanks to reservations in local bodies. The new Nari Shakti Vandan Act guarantees one‑third of seats in Parliament and state assemblies for women, underscoring a priority on youth and gender equality.

On technology, he said AI and digital platforms can make democracy more transparent and efficient. But he warned that technology must serve people, not the other way around, and called for global standards to balance innovation and safety.

Birla drew on India’s ancient democratic traditions. He noted that village panchayats and a culture of dialogue have shaped the nation’s democratic spirit. The mantra “Vasudhaiva Kuttumbakam”—the world is one family—remains a guiding principle.

He praised the Commonwealth’s diversity. Despite different languages, cultures and landscapes, member states share democratic values and a common vision for the future. Birla affirmed India’s commitment to remain an active partner in this global family.
