Pithoragarh Hurricanes defeat Mussoorie Thunders in opening match of Women’s Uttarakhand Premier League

In the opening match of the Women’s Uttarakhand Premier League, Pithoragarh Hurricanes pulled off an exciting seven-wicket victory over defending champions Mussoorie Thunders on Tuesday in Dehradun. This T20 cricket showdown kicked off the second season with plenty of drama and standout performances.
Mussoorie Thunders’ new captain, Amisha Bahukhandi, chose to bat first, but it turned into a tough day for her team. They stumbled through the powerplay, reaching just 25 runs for two wickets after six overs. Reena Jindal tried to steady the ship with a patient 24 off 37 balls, but Vaishali Tulera dismissed her on the last ball of the 13th over. The Thunders collapsed from there, getting all out for a modest 91 runs.
The Hurricanes’ bowlers shone bright. Former Thunders skipper Mansi Joshi, now playing for Pithoragarh, opened with a stunning maiden over that claimed a wicket. She finished with impressive figures of 1 for 3 in just two overs. Isha Gulreia and Rudra Sharma backed her up, each grabbing two wickets to keep the pressure on.
Chasing 92, the Hurricanes got off to a solid start thanks to Manisha Kunwar’s quick 17 off 21 balls, including two boundaries and a big six. After Amisha Bahukhandi removed her, Ananya Mehra and Nandini Kaushik took charge. Mehra scored a crucial 35 off 39, while Kaushik remained unbeaten on 31 off 34. Their 53-run partnership off 55 balls sealed the deal, as the Hurricanes reached the target in under 17 overs.
Ananya Mehra earned Player of the Match honors for her all-around heroics—she picked up 1 wicket for 14 runs in 3.5 overs with the ball and anchored the chase with her bat. Sunil Kumar Joshi, chairman of the Uttarakhand Premier League’s governing council, handed her the trophy and a Rs 10,000 cheque.
The Uttarakhand Premier League is Uttarakhand’s top T20 cricket tournament, run by the Cricket Association of Uttarakhand. Its first season ran in September 2024 at Dehradun’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, featuring five men’s teams and three women’s squads. The event gives young players from the state a chance to compete alongside stars who’ve played for India, IPL teams, and WPL franchises, boosting local cricket talent.
