Former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan praises the decision to name Ravindra Jadeja as vice-captain for India’s upcoming home Test series against the West Indies. With Shubman Gill stepping up as captain, Wassan sees this as a smart choice for the team’s future.
India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed the 15-member squad on Thursday for the two-match Test series, kicking off on October 2 in Ahmedabad. Gill takes the captain’s role, and Jadeja supports him as vice-captain. This comes while regular wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant continues his recovery from a toe fracture he picked up during the England tour earlier this year.
The series gets underway with the first Test at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, followed by the second at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Wassan, speaking to , explained why Jadeja fits the bill perfectly. “Jadeja is a veteran player, and when Shubman Gill became captain, his name naturally came up,” Wassan said. “It’s the right call because Gill is one of our top three-format stars with a bright future ahead.”
Wassan added that while Jadeja’s peak performance days might be behind him, handing him the vice-captaincy role makes total sense. “Giving him full captaincy would be a short-term fix, but vice-captain is spot on,” he noted.
As the world’s No. 1 Test all-rounder, Jadeja brings plenty of experience to the Indian cricket team. In his Test career so far, he’s scored 3,886 runs at an average of 37.73, including five centuries and 27 half-centuries. On the bowling front, he’s claimed 330 wickets at an average of 25.12, with 15 five-wicket hauls.
Here’s the full India squad for the West Indies Test series: Shubman Gill (captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, N Jagadeesan, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Kuldeep Yadav.
