Late Irrfan Khan-starrer ‘The Lunchbox’ turns 12, Nimrat Kaur pens tender note

On the 12th anniversary of the beloved film “The Lunchbox,” actress Nimrat Kaur shared a heartfelt Instagram post remembering her role and the late Irrfan Khan. The movie, released in 2013 and directed by Ritesh Batra, first hit screens on September 20, turning heads with its simple yet touching story.

Nimrat posted a series of stills and clips from the film, capturing the magic of her character Ila. In her caption, she wrote, “12 years ago today, Ila’s lunchbox carried not just her food, but a piece of my heart to you all. While Sajan and her love story remains a mystery, ours carries on.” She went on to thank fans, saying the film, like a slow-cooked dish, “only taste[s] better and better with the fullness of time.” Nimrat tagged Irrfan, producer Karan Johar, and others, using #Irrfan to honor her co-star.

“The Lunchbox” tells the story of a mix-up in Mumbai’s famous dabbawala tiffin service. Ila prepares a special lunch for her husband, but it ends up with lonely office worker Saajan Fernandes, played by Irrfan Khan. What starts as a mistake blooms into an unexpected friendship through notes passed in the lunchbox. The film also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a new colleague, along with Bharti Achrekar and Nakul Vaid.

This indie gem became an international hit, co-produced by studios in India, the US, Germany, and France. It premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, where it won the Viewers Choice Award, also called the Grand Rail d’Or. The movie also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival that year, earning praise for its warm take on loneliness and connection in bustling Mumbai.

Sadly, Irrfan Khan, the acclaimed actor who brought Saajan to life, passed away in 2020 at age 53. He had been battling neuroendocrine cancer since his 2018 diagnosis and was hospitalized for a colon infection just before his death. Heartbreakingly, his mother, Saeeda Begum, died at 93 in Jaipur only four days earlier.

Fans continue to cherish “The Lunchbox” for its emotional depth and stellar performances, keeping Irrfan’s legacy alive through stories like this one.
