Former Australian captain Mark Taylor warns that the veteran spin bowler Nathan Lyon may miss the opening Ashes Test in Perth on November 21. Taylor says Australian selectors could favour an all‑rounder like Cameron Green, who could strengthen the batting line‑up and add seam‑bowling options.
Taylor told Nine’s Wide World of Sports that if Green is healthy enough to bowl, he will be chosen. “If Green can bowl a few overs, he’ll play,” Taylor said. “That would leave Lyon out, and the unfortunate person could be Webster.”
Lyon, 37, is the leading wicket‑taker in Perth, having claimed 29 Test wickets there at an average of under 21. Australia already dropped a key bowler this season—a decision that could repeat if Lyon is left out of the first Test.
Taylor added that even if the team fields all their fast bowlers, Green, and Webster, they could still want an off‑spinner. “They might bring in another off‑spinner from the batting side, which I don’t like, but Nathan has to play if possible,” he noted.
The former skipper also urges a debut for uncapped batter Jake Weatherald in the opening match and says dropping youngster Sam Kostas is likely. “We need a solid opening partnership,” Taylor said. “Weatherald, 31, should get a chance—he’s young enough to stay fit for a few more years. Usman Khawaja is 39 and will retire soon.”
Taylor’s comments come as Australia prepares to face England in a high‑profile Ashes Test. Fans will be watching to see whether selection priorities favour a spin bowler or a versatile all‑rounder in the season’s opening clash.
