Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir, who represents Bharatpur in the minority‑heavy Murshidabad district, was officially suspended from the party on Thursday. He has said he will step down from Parliament by December 8 and will unveil his own political party on December 22.
“I will be resigning as the MLA of Bharatpur either on Friday or on Monday. Thereafter, I will be announcing my new political party on December 22. My schedule on December 6 regarding laying the foundation stone of Babri Mosque at Beldanga in Murshidabad district will remain the same,” Kabir announced shortly after the suspension notice was issued by West Bengal Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Minister and Kolkata Municipal Corporation mayor Firhad Hakim.
He added that he only learned of the suspension through media reports, never having been formally notified by party officials.
“No one from the party had officially intimated me. Neither have I received any written communication in the matter from anyone in the party. I have a lot of things to say. I will say that only after I officially receive the suspension letter from the party," Kabir said.
The suspension announcement coincided with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s planned address at an anti‑Special Intensive Revision (SIR) rally in Baharampur, Murshidabad.
Hakim explained that Kabir’s declaration of building the Babri Mosque was meant to stir up long‑standing tensions related to the original mosque in Ayodhya.
“We feel that the BJP had some role to play in his recent activities. We also feel that the BJP is trying to ignite divisive politics by keeping Kabir in the forefront,” Hakim added.
Kabir had previously been warned multiple times by Trinamool Congress leaders for alleged anti‑party behaviour and public remarks that embarrassed the party. Finally, on Thursday, the party officially suspended him.
