Exclusive | New dad named Midtown South’s NYPD ‘Officer of the Year’ for nabbing armed maniac
At the Safe City Safe Streets Luncheon held on Thursday at the Manhattan Penthouse, NYPD Officer Thomas Bucholz, 30, was presented with the Midtown South Precinct’s “Officer of the Year” award, a recognition he accepted amid cheers from dozens of coworkers and family, including his two‑month‑old daughter. The honor comes after his pursuit and arrest of a drug‑ and weapon‑laden suspect who fled a serious crash in September. The jailed offender was found with a stack of narcotics, an altered assault rifle, and a loaded handgun hidden in the vehicle.
Bucholz, who has spent nine years faithfully serving only Midtown South, told The Post ahead of the ceremony that “It’s a very big honor to me. It’s a very big precinct and I’m not the only one who does tremendous work.” He added that everyone in the precinct works beyond expectations for the community, the local businesses and tourists alike.
The event also celebrated other Manhattan officers: Jennifer Paolino from the 6th Precinct, Christian Orellana from the 10th, and Michael Dejesus from the 13th were all named “Officers of the Year.”
Growing up on Long Island, Bucholz has always aspired to be an NYPD officer. Since welcoming his baby, Scarlett, with his wife Meghan, he has set his sights on a higher goal—seeking to become a detective in the near future. His commitment to both his family and his public service continues to drive his ambition.
