Two arrested for kidnapping, murder of gold trader in Bengal

In Kolkata, authorities have arrested two men linked to the kidnapping and murder of a gold trader from West Midnapore district. The case involves Swapan Kamilya, a local gold shop owner in Duttabad, Salt Lake, and Rajganj Block Development Officer (BDO) Prashant Barman.

What happened

Swapan Kamilya disappeared on October 27 after Rajganj BDO Barman and a group of five people visited his shop in Duttabad. The BDO allegedly took Kamilya and his landlord‑owner to New Town in a vehicle with a blue light on top. Kamilya was never seen again. The next day, his body was found in a ditch in the Jatragachi area, showing multiple injuries. The BDO’s driver, Raju Dhali, and a friend, Tufan Thapa, were named as suspects in the kidnapping and murder.

Police action

  • Two men were taken into custody on Saturday and presented to the Bidhannagar Sub‑divisional Court, which ordered 12 days of police custody.
  • CCTV footage captured the suspect car’s blue light and the removal of the body.
  • The police said the driver and friend had met the BDO at the shop, then drove away with Kamilya’s body.

Background

Swapan Kamilya’s family had already filed a complaint against the BDO on November 5, citing kidnapping, murder, and evidence tampering. Earlier, in August, the BDO allegedly stole gold jewelry from Kamilya’s house and sold it to the caretaker, who later claimed the gold was sold back to Kamilya. When the BDO visited Kamilya’s house in West Midnapore, he reportedly threatened to kill him. Kamilya’s brother‑in‑law submitted a written complaint at Bidhannagar South police station, and a case was registered in the Mohohpur police precinct.

Key names and places

  • Swapan Kamilya – gold trader, Duttabad, Salt Lake, Kolkata.
  • Prashant Barman – Rajganj BDO.
  • Raju Dhali – BDO’s driver, resident of Rajarhat, New Town.
  • Tufan Thapa – friend of the BDO.
  • Jatragachi, New Town, and Duttabad – locations tied to the disappearance and body discovery.

The investigation continues as police look into the days between Kamilya’s last sighting and his body’s discovery. The case remains a serious example of alleged misconduct by a government officer, prompting calls for a transparent probe and swift justice.
