Iran’s supreme leader rules out imminent nuclear talks with US

Iran’s top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has slammed the idea of jumping back into nuclear talks with the United States right now. He says such negotiations would hurt Iran’s interests more than help them.

In a TV speech on Tuesday from Tehran, Khamenei made it clear: “Under these conditions, talking to the US government won’t benefit us at all. It won’t shield us from losses and could even cause big ones—some that we can’t fix.”

Khamenei pointed out how the US seems to have already decided the outcome. They want Iran to halt all nuclear activities and stop enriching uranium. “That’s not real negotiation,” he said. “It’s just them dictating terms.”

He went further, noting the US demands Iran give up its short-, medium-, and long-range missiles too. Khamenei called this a move to leave Iran defenseless against any attacks.

The leader also rattled off years of US actions against Iran that he sees as hostile. In his view, sitting down for nuclear deal talks—or anything else—with Washington leads straight to a dead end.

To understand the tension, rewind to 2015. Iran struck a nuclear agreement with world powers, limiting its program in exchange for lifting tough economic sanctions. But the US ditched the deal in 2018 under President Trump and slapped sanctions back on. Iran fired back by easing its own limits on nuclear work, like uranium enrichment.

Fast-forward to this year: Iran and the US kicked off indirect talks in April to revive the nuclear deal and ease sanctions. Things heated up just before their sixth round in June. Israel unleashed airstrikes on key Iranian spots, hitting nuclear and military sites. The attacks killed top commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians. Iran hit back with waves of missiles and drones aimed at Israel. Then, on June 22, US forces bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities.

With this fresh history of clashes, Khamenei’s warning underscores Iran’s deep distrust in US-Iran nuclear negotiations amid ongoing sanctions and regional conflicts.
