PM Modi to meet Mauritian counterpart Ramgoolam in Varanasi today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold key bilateral talks with Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Varanasi on Thursday. The meeting kicks off around 11:30 a.m. in Modi’s home constituency, where the ancient city buzzes with decorations and special arrangements to welcome the visiting leader.

Ramgoolam arrived in India on September 9 for a state visit that runs until the 16th. This high-profile get-together in Varanasi spotlights the deep civilizational ties, spiritual connections, and strong people-to-people bonds that make India-Mauritius relations so special.

During the discussions, the two leaders will review their full range of cooperation. They’ll focus on boosting development partnerships and building capacities in key areas like healthcare, education, science and technology, energy, and infrastructure. Expect fresh ideas on renewable energy, digital public infrastructure, and the blue economy to take center stage.

These talks build on the momentum from Modi’s March visit to Mauritius this year. Back then, both nations upgraded their ties to an ‘Enhanced Strategic Partnership.’ As a vital maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region, Mauritius plays a big role in India’s MAHASAGAR Vision—aimed at mutual security and growth across the region—and the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. Their partnership also supports the dreams of the Global South for a better future.

The Varanasi meeting promises to be a milestone for India-Mauritius relations, strengthening commitments to shared prosperity, sustainable growth, and a secure world for all.

On Wednesday, Ramgoolam spoke glowingly about the bond at a business conclave in Varanasi. He called India-Mauritius ties “forever lasting” and highlighted Mauritius as India’s most reliable partner, packed with huge business potential. He urged deeper historical, cultural, and economic links. The event drew Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, along with top industry leaders.

This isn’t Ramgoolam’s first big India trip. Back in 2014, he was the only non-SAARC leader invited to Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized the unique relationship in a release: India and Mauritius share history, culture, and close people ties. As a key player in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius fits perfectly into India’s MAHASAGAR and Neighbourhood First strategies, plus Global South goals.

Ramgoolam’s visit follows Modi’s two-day state trip to Mauritius in March, where he joined their 57th National Day celebrations. There, Modi met Ramgoolam and President Dharam Gokhool for bilateral chats.

Fun fact: India set up diplomatic relations with Mauritius in 1948—before Mauritius gained independence. Their bond thrives on trust, understanding, and regular high-level exchanges, as per the MEA.
