‘Proud moment for Indian hockey’: PM Modi hails India’s Asia Cup triumph

Indian Men’s Hockey Team Wins Asia Cup 2025 with Thrilling 4-1 Victory Over South Korea

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has showered praise on the Indian men’s hockey team for their stunning Asia Cup 2025 triumph. The team clinched the title by beating defending champions South Korea 4-1 in the final match held in Rajgir, Bihar, on Sunday. This exciting win not only crowns India as Asia’s top hockey power but also secures a direct spot in the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.

This marks India’s fourth Asia Cup hockey title, following their previous victories in 2003, 2007, and 2017. South Korea, however, holds the record with five titles from 1994, 1999, 2009, 2013, and 2022. Hockey fans across India are buzzing with excitement over this major achievement in Indian hockey.

PM Modi shared his joy on X (formerly Twitter), posting: "Congratulations to our Men’s Hockey Team for their splendid win in the Asia Cup 2025 held in Rajgir, Bihar. This win is even more special because they have defeated the defending champions, South Korea!" He added, "This is a proud moment for Indian hockey and Indian sports. May our players continue to scale even greater heights and bring more glory to the nation!"

Modi also gave a shoutout to the Bihar government and locals for making the event a hit. "I would also like to appreciate the Government and people of Bihar, whose efforts have ensured Rajgir hosted a brilliant tournament and has become a vibrant sporting hub," he wrote.

The final match was a dominant display by India from the start. Sukhjeet Singh fired in the opening goal right from the first minute, setting the tone. The hosts kept the pressure on, with Dilpreet Singh scoring twice in the 28th and 45th minutes, and Amit Rohidas adding another in the 50th. South Korea managed a late consolation goal through Son Dain in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough to stop India’s momentum. This Asia Cup final victory highlights India’s rising strength in international hockey.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya joined the celebrations on X, saying: "Outstanding Performance! Hearty congratulations to the Indian Hockey Team for defeating Korea 4-1 in the final of the Asia Cup Hockey held in Rajgir, Bihar, and winning the champion’s title. You all have set an example of excellent play throughout the Asia Cup; heartfelt best wishes to everyone."

Even Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra cheered the team, calling it a "joyful and proud moment for the entire country." In her X post, she wrote: "India has created history by winning the Hockey Asia Cup for the fourth time. Along with this, India has also qualified for the World Cup. This is an extremely joyful and proud moment for the entire country. Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Team India."

Under captain Harmanpreet Singh’s leadership, India stayed unbeaten in the tournament with five wins and one draw. They powered through the pool stage with three straight victories, then shone in the Super 4s by thrashing Malaysia 4-1 and China 7-0, before drawing 2-2 with South Korea. This flawless run makes the Asia Cup 2025 win a true milestone for Indian sports fans everywhere.
