Maxwell pulls out of IPL 2026 ahead of mini-auction

New Delhi: Australian all‑rounder Glenn Maxwell has decided that he will not participate in the 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He announced this only a few weeks before the auction, explaining that he’s stepping away with a lot of gratitude for the league.

After Punjab Kings released him, Maxwell was expected to be available for auction on December 16. Instead, he has chosen not to compete in India’s lucrative competition.

“After many unforgettable seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name into the auction this year. It’s a big call, and one I make with a lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me,” Maxwell wrote in a statement he posted on Instagram.

“The IPL has helped shape me as a cricketer and as a person. I’ve been lucky to play with world‑class teammates, represent incredible franchises, and perform in front of fans whose passion is unmatched. The memories, the challenges, and the energy of India will stay with me forever. Thank you for all your support over the years, hopefully see you soon. Cheers Maxi,” he added.

Maxwell’s most recent stint with Punjab Kings was in the 2025 edition, where he played under skipper Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting. A finger injury sustained midway through the campaign ultimately forced him out for the rest of the season.

Given his statement and hints of a permanent exit, Maxwell’s future in the IPL appears uncertain. He joins a growing list of high‑profile players who have stepped back from the league—after Andre Russell’s retirement and move into coaching for the Kolkata Knight Riders, and Faf du Plessis’ decision to skip the Abu Dhabi mini‑auction and instead join the Pakistan Super League.
