In Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, Governor S. Abdul Nazeer honored Mahatma Gandhi on his 156th birth anniversary and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 121st. He laid flowers at their portraits during a special event at Durbar Hall in Raj Bhavan.
Governor Nazeer spoke warmly about Gandhi’s key role in India’s independence movement. He stressed how Gandhi’s ideas of peace and non-violence still guide us today. “This message matters now more than ever,” he said.
The governor also highlighted Shastri’s big impact on the freedom struggle and his famous slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,” which rallied soldiers and farmers to build a stronger India.
October 2 holds special meaning. In India, people celebrate it as Gandhi Jayanti to remember the Father of the Nation, born on this day in 1869. Around the world, it’s the International Day of Non-Violence, thanks to a 2007 United Nations resolution backed by over 140 countries.
At the UN, leaders mark the day with speeches from the Secretary-General and events that tie Gandhi’s philosophy to today’s global conflicts. These gatherings remind everyone that truth and non-violence beat any weapon.
In India, tributes pour in at places like Raj Ghat, along with cultural shows, school programs, and drives to spread Gandhi’s ideals of simplicity and equality.
Others at the Raj Bhavan event included Joint Secretary P.S. Suryaprakash, Deputy Secretary P. Raghu, and staff members, all joining in the heartfelt homage.
