Kolkata, Dec 4 – The Election Commission of India (ECI) has flagged three polling locations in West Bengal that have zero “self” voters according to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR). A “self” voter is anyone whose name already appears in the 2002 voters’ list, the baseline for this revision. Those booths, according to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, consist entirely of “progeny” voters—electors whose parents were listed in 2002—but none of them qualify as “self” voters.
Because such a scenario is highly unlikely, the ECI has ordered a fresh review of each of the three booths. The first is Part 110 in the Dinhata Assembly area of Cooch Behar district, where all 782 registered voters are “progeny” only. The second, Part 53 in Pandua Assembly of Hooghly district, also has 668 “progeny” voters. The third, Part 48 in Kultali Assembly of South 24 Parganas, contains 768 “progeny” voters and no “self” voters.
During the SIR, voters who are either “self” or “progeny” automatically remain on the list and need not present any additional documents. The CEO’s office says the ECI is baffled that an entire booth could lack a single “self” voter. Hence, a review has been mandated, and the ECI warned that if any booth‑level or registration officer is found to have engaged in misconduct—whether fraud, duplicate registration, or unregistered relocations—disciplinary action will follow.
In addition, the number of booths in West Bengal without any deceased, duplicated, or relocated voters has fallen dramatically. At Wednesday night, only 29 such booths remained, down from a peak of 2,208 on Monday and then 480 on Tuesday.
