“Have requested for fair and quick investigation”: Haryana Additional Chief Secretary on IPS officer’s death

The senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar was found dead in his Chandigarh home on October 7, and police say his death was caused by a gunshot wound. Residents and officials say the circumstances are suspicious and that a thorough probe is urgent.
Haryana’s Additional Chief Secretary, D Suresh Kumar, asked reporters on Friday that the investigation be fair and quick. He called for the immediate arrest of the Director General of Police, Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, and the Superintendent of Police in Rohtak, Narendra Bijarniya. Those two officers are now named in an FIR that was filed after the wife of the deceased, IAS officer Amneet Puran Kumar, lodged a complaint and forwarded a suicide note.
To keep the inquiry impartial, Chandigarh Police set up a six‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT). The team is headed by Inspector General Pushpendra Kumar and includes senior officers such as SSP Kanwardeep Kaur and SP Priyanka. The SIT will investigate the case under Section 108 of the CrPC and other relevant sections, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Political leaders have weighed in. AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang told Congress that the BJP‑led state government must listen to the family’s demands and take action against the accused officers. Congress MP Varun Chaudhry added that the FIR should clearly list the names of the alleged offenders, that a sitting judge should chair the inquiry, and that security be given to the bereaved family.
Earlier, the wife of Y Puran Kumar sent a detailed letter to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. She asked for an immediate FIR, the suspension and arrest of the accused, and immunity from harm for her family.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials remain focused on delivering a transparent and swift legal process for the case.
