PM Modi launches ‘Gyan Bharatam Portal’ to boost manuscript digitisation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a big step towards preserving India’s ancient wisdom on Friday. He launched the Gyan Bharatam Portal in New Delhi, a smart digital platform that speeds up the digitization, preservation, and easy access to thousands of rare manuscripts.

The launch happened during the International Conference on Gyan Bharatam at Vigyan Bhawan. PM Modi also checked out an exciting exhibition put together by the Union Ministry of Culture. This portal is part of a major national drive called Gyan Bharatam, all about saving, digitizing, and sharing India’s rich manuscript heritage with everyone.

The Ministry of Culture kicked off this first-ever conference on “Reclaiming India’s Knowledge Legacy through Manuscript Heritage.” It ran from September 11 to 13 at Vigyan Bhawan and drew over 1,100 people – think scholars, experts, institutions, and culture lovers from India and around the world. Everyone came together to chat, debate, and plan how to protect these treasures and make them available globally.

Gyan Bharatam isn’t just a project; it’s a bold movement to safeguard India’s massive collection of ancient manuscripts. It honors our deep cultural roots while pushing towards PM Modi’s dream of a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, by 2047. The goal? Turn India into a true world teacher, or Vishwa Guru, by blending old wisdom with cutting-edge innovation.

So, what does this initiative actually do? It sets up a full plan to revive our manuscript legacy. Key goals include spotting and cataloging manuscripts through a national register, fixing up damaged texts, using AI tools for massive digitization, and building a National Digital Repository for safe online storage. Plus, it boosts research, translations, and publications of these rare gems. The portal will train scholars and conservators, create user-friendly digital tools, and get the public involved through fun collaborative programs.

Looking ahead, Gyan Bharatam will forge global partnerships and weave this ancient knowledge into modern education. This way, India can lead the world in sharing and exchanging knowledge. It’s an inspiring mix of tradition and tech that’s set to make our heritage alive for generations.
