Cambodian PM officially opens kingdom’s biggest airport

Cambodia’s new flag‑ship airport, the Techo International Airport (TIA), opened on Monday in southern Kandal province, a short drive from Phnom Pehn. Prime Minister Hun Manet officially welcomed the 2.3 billion‑dollar, 4‑tiered hub during an inaugural ceremony that drew officials and investors alike.

“The TIA is now Cambodia’s biggest airport,” Manet told the crowd. “I’m confident it will spark economic growth and put more visitors and investors in Phnom Pehn.” He added that the airport’s dual 4‑kilometre runway can handle long‑haul flights and a wide range of planes, turning the airport into a major passenger and cargo centre for the country and the region.

The project began in 2020 and was built by China State Construction Engineering Corporation. The state‑owned Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd. owns the 2,600‑hectare site, which sits about 20 km south of the capital. During the launch, Pung Kheav Se, chairman of the investment company, highlighted the first phase, which features the main terminal, runways, ancillary buildings and dedicated terminals for general aviation and VVIP passengers.

“We built a gateway into the future,” Se said. “TIA is an economic engine and a symbol of Cambodia’s aspirations.” The airport’s design will allow for three phases: 13 million passengers in Phase 1, 30 million in Phase 2, and 50 million in Phase 3.

With TIA, Cambodia now runs three international airports: TIA, Siem Reap Angkor and Sihanouk Airport. The new hub is expected to boost tourism, create jobs and strengthen Cambodia’s ties with the rest of Southeast Asia and beyond.
