Congress insulted Bhupen Hazarika, that hurt me most, says PM Modi in Assam

PM Modi Launches Key Projects in Assam, Slams Congress Over Bhupen Hazarika Insult

Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off a series of major infrastructure and industrial projects in Assam’s Darrang district on Sunday. The event in Mangaldoi drew huge crowds, as Modi laid foundation stones for vital developments like a new Medical College and Hospital, a GNM school, and a B.Sc Nursing College. These health education projects aim to boost medical training and services in the region.

Modi also flagged off the Guwahati Ring Road Project to cut down traffic jams and improve city connections. Another highlight was the foundation stone for the Kuruwa-Narengi Bridge across the Brahmaputra River, which will enhance transport links and speed up travel in Northeast India.

Speaking at the gathering, PM Modi shared a personal touch, calling it a "holy experience" on Janmashtami in the land of Maa Kamakhya. He linked it to his recent Red Fort speech, where he mentioned Lord Krishna and the idea of a Sudarshan Chakra in India’s future security plans. "Yesterday was my first visit to Assam after Operation Sindoor, a big success with Maa Kamakhya’s blessings," he added.

This came right after Modi’s trip to Guwahati on Saturday, where he joined the 100th birth anniversary celebrations of Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika. The PM paid heartfelt tributes to the iconic singer and Assam’s cultural hero, saying, "Great sons and daughters of Assam dreamed big for our ancestors, and now the BJP’s double-engine government is making those dreams come true."

But Modi didn’t hold back on criticism. He targeted the Congress party for "insulting" Hazarika and hurting Northeast sentiments. Recalling a video shown by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Modi said Congress chief had mocked the Bharat Ratna award, calling it for "those who sing and dance" when the government honored Hazarika. He tied it to a 1962 statement by former PM Jawaharlal Nehru during the China war, which he said insulted Northeast people.

"The current Congress generation follows the same path, wounding regional feelings," Modi said emotionally. "I don’t mind abuse aimed at me—I’m a Shiv bhakt and can handle poison. But insulting someone like Bhupen Da hurts deeply. Tell me, was honoring him with Bharat Ratna right or wrong? Their insult is unacceptable." He added, "My Northeast is like my God. If I don’t speak up for it here, where will I?"

Modi promised to keep pushing for the region’s growth, brushing off any backlash. "They’ll say I’m ranting again, but I won’t stay silent."

Later that day, PM Modi headed to Numaligarh in Golaghat district. There, he inaugurated the Assam Bio-Ethanol Private Limited plant, a step toward clean energy and sustainable fuel in India. He also laid the foundation for a polypropylene plant at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), set to boost the petrochemical industry and create thousands of jobs.

These Assam infrastructure projects and industrial initiatives show the government’s focus on Northeast development, blending progress with cultural respect.
