“Implemented major reform in GST”: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praises PM Modi’s address

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address to the nation, calling the latest Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms a game-changer for everyday Indians. Speaking to in New Delhi on Sunday, Vaishnaw said these changes build on the original GST launch, which already transformed India’s tangled tax system.

“Before 2014, moving goods across the country meant dealing with endless checkpoints, multiple duties, and confusing rules—it was a nightmare,” Vaishnaw explained. “GST fixed a lot of that, helping industries and middle-class families. Now, these new tweaks will make life even easier for everyone, from the poor and low-income groups to our 140 crore citizens.”

He highlighted how the reforms cut burdens and deliver real relief. Prices on 99 common items—like kitchen utensils, clothes, school supplies, TVs, refrigerators, scooters, and cars—will drop, leading to big savings. “This is why we’re celebrating GST Bachat Utsav—a true savings festival. Best wishes to all!” Vaishnaw added.

Vaishnaw also pointed to India’s growing self-confidence, fueling bold moves in key sectors. “We’re now making and exporting our own defense equipment—something we never dreamed of. In telecom, India has built its first homegrown 4G stack, ready for 5G upgrades. Only five companies worldwide had this tech before us.” He noted breakthroughs in semiconductors, a decades-long goal, and the fully indigenous Vande Bharat trains, which are turning heads globally. “The Prime Minister’s push for self-reliance taps into our talent and design skills—it’s powerful stuff.”

Earlier that day, Prime Minister Modi urged Indians to embrace Swadeshi and choose Made in India products as the GST reforms kick in on September 22—the start of Shardiya Navaratri. “Turn every home and shop into a showcase of Swadeshi goods,” Modi said in his nationwide speech.

He framed the changes as a “Bachat Utsav,” encouraging people to buy local items that reflect the hard work of India’s youth. “These products carry the sweat and effort of our sons and daughters. Let’s support them.” Modi tied the reforms to the government’s “Nagrik Devo Bhava” approach, treating citizens like gods. Combining these GST cuts with recent income tax exemptions, he said, will save Indians over Rs 2.5 lakh crore in just one year.

The Prime Minister stressed self-reliance as the key to a developed India, especially for small businesses and MSMEs. “GST rate reductions and simpler rules will boost their sales and cut their taxes— a double win.” He drew inspiration from the freedom struggle, where Swadeshi fueled independence. “Just like that movement built our nation’s strength, today’s Swadeshi drive will power our economic prosperity.”

Approved at the GST Council’s 56th meeting earlier this month, these reforms aim to ease taxes and spark growth across India’s economy.
