Facing possible Republican revolt, Trump reverses course on hardline stance

New York, Nov 17 – President Donald Trump is taking a new stance on a hot issue inside the Republican Party. After a week of political backlash, Trump told GOP lawmakers to let a congressional vote on the release of Jeffrey Epstein’s files go ahead.

The vote, set for Tuesday, will open a trove of emails and documents that link Epstein to many high‑profile politicians and business leaders. The move follows the Republicans’ push for transparency, even as Democrats hope the release could expose their own key figures.

Trump’s change of mind comes amid growing discontent among his base. Earlier this week, he withdrew tariffs on food items from India—tea, mangoes and cashew nuts—after price hikes sparked protests. Now he’s facing pressure from hard‑liners who call for the documents to be made public.

“We have nothing to hide,” Trump said. “Go ahead with the vote.” He also called one supporter a traitor, sparking a brief public feud with Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The release of Epstein’s papers could stir feelings on both sides. Republicans say the documents might spotlight prominent Democrats, while Democrats believe the papers could embarrass Trump.

The move to release the files hails from GOP members who want a fuller picture of Epstein’s network. When the vote was stalled, Speaker Mike Johnson stepped in, but ultimately a growing number of Representatives agreed to proceed.

Epstein, a convicted billionaire and alleged sex‑criminal, died in a New York jail cell in 2019. His ties to powerful people—such as former U.S. officials, business leaders and even Prince Andrew—have long fueled conspiracy theories. Some investigations look into former President Bill Clinton, Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and JPMorgan Chase as well.

Trump once campaigned in 2024 on opening Epstein’s records, but he now says he was only removing the former billionaire from his Mar‑a‑Lago members’ list. He claims ignorance of any child trafficking, but emails recently released show possible knowledge.

The upcoming vote on Tuesday will mark a significant point in the ongoing debate over transparency and accountability in Washington. Watch the developments on the day, as the political ripple effects could hit numerous leading figures in both parties.
