India’s speed skating team made a triumphant return to Delhi Airport on Tuesday, fresh off their record-breaking success at the World Speed Skating Championships in China. For the first time ever, the Indian athletes grabbed three gold medals and two bronzes, marking the country’s best performance yet in this thrilling roller sport.
Leading the pack was senior skater Anandkumar Velkumar, who became the first Indian to snag a gold in the senior men’s 1,000-meter sprint with an impressive time of 1:24.924. He didn’t stop there—Velkumar added another gold in the men’s marathon event and a bronze in the 500-meter sprint, giving him a personal haul of three medals. According to World Skate, the international body for roller sports, this breakthrough is huge for India in a discipline usually ruled by European and East Asian powerhouses.
The junior skaters stepped up too, boosting India’s medal count. Krish Sharma powered to gold in the junior men’s 1,000-meter sprint, while Anish Raj earned bronze in the junior men’s one-lap sprint. The championships ran from September 13 to 21 in China, and the team’s efforts shattered expectations.
Tulsi Ram Agarwal, president of the Roller Skating Federation of India, couldn’t hide his excitement. “It’s our immense pleasure that we’ve broken through the Chinese wall—the stronghold of Western countries in speed skating—by winning three golds and two bronzes,” he said.
Anandkumar, the star with three medals, shared his thrill with . “I just won two gold medals at the world championships. I feel really great, and the whole team is super happy. This is the first time we’ve won so many medals at the event.” He added that the achievement fires him up for even bigger wins ahead.
Junior gold medalist Krish Sharma called it a dream realized. “I’d been training so hard for this, so it’s finally awesome to achieve it,” he said.
Anish Raj, the other junior medal winner, echoed the optimism. “I feel really good. I think we’ll take this sport to new heights in India. With the federation’s support, we’ll win even more medals in the coming years.”
