UNHRC session hears India’s call for stronger global action on Pahalgam massacre

In Geneva, Switzerland, on September 25, Indian social leader Dr. SN Sharma, CEO of Rajasthan Samgrah Kalyan Sansthan, raised alarms at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) over the deadly Pahalgam massacre. He urged the world to step up efforts against cross-border terrorism during the council’s 60th session.

Sharma slammed terrorism as a brutal attack on human dignity and global peace. He pointed to the horrific April 22, 2025, incident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, where gunmen killed 26 innocent civilians—mostly pilgrims and tourists—in a targeted strike.

“This isn’t just about borders,” Sharma told the council president. “Terrorism strikes at the heart of humanity and the values in the UN Charter. The serene Pahalgam valleys turned into a nightmare from a planned wave of transnational militancy meant to sow fear and disrupt peace.”

He stressed that the Pahalgam tragedy fits a larger pattern of extremist violence worldwide, linking it to attacks in Mumbai, Pulwama, Paris, and Manchester. “We can’t see cross-border terrorism as just a local security problem,” Sharma said. “It’s a global human rights crisis that demands a united international fightback.”

Sharma wrapped up by calling for global solidarity: “The world needs to act with strong resolve. Let history remember our action, not our silence.”

Before him, Kashmiri human rights activist Tasleema Akhter shared her painful story as a terrorism survivor. Speaking for victims in Jammu and Kashmir, she described the terror of April 11, 1999, when she was just 11. Armed militants and Pakistan-sponsored terrorists abducted her father and older brother from their home.

Her father returned badly tortured, but her brother suffered seven days in captivity. The ordeal forced her family to flee their ancestral home. “That day, they stole my childhood forever,” Akhter said, highlighting the ongoing pain from Pakistan-backed terrorism in the region.
