US chess superstar was incoherent, rambling in concerning final live stream before his death

Chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, 29, from Charlotte, North Carolina, has died, the Olympic‑class player’s club and family announced on Monday. Naroditsky was livestreaming a chess game on the night of October 17, an event that ended with him speaking incoherently and looking exhausted.

He was under pressure when he was accused of cheating by former world champion Vladimir Kramnik. Kramnik claimed the American had gained an unfair advantage, a charge that Naroditsky openly denied in his final stream. He said, “Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I start doing well, people assume the worst of intentions.”

During the broadcast, the player also read a subscriber’s comment about the cheating allegations: “This will not be the last time he faces criticism or trolling.” Naroditsky replied, “Oh, it actually will be,” suggesting his fight over the accusations might end with him.

Police in Charlotte–Mecklenburg have not yet released a cause of death. The chess community is still reeling from the loss of a young talent who had become prominent on the world stage.
