Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has just wrapped up his Cabinet expansion by handing out key portfolios to eight newly sworn-in ministers. He kept tight control by holding onto major departments like Finance and Cabinet Affairs for himself. This move comes right after the ministers took their oaths on Tuesday at Raj Bhavan, with Governor C.H. Vijayashankar overseeing the ceremony.
The fresh lineup includes four members from the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), two from the United Democratic Party (UDP), one from the BJP, and one from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP). It’s all about boosting political balance in the Meghalaya government while strengthening key areas.
Let’s break down who got what. From the NPP side:
– Wailadmiki Shylla steps up to handle Health and Family Welfare, Sports and Youth Affairs, and Home (Passport).
– Timothy D. Shira takes on Tourism, Agriculture, and Fisheries.
– Brening A. Sangma gets Border Area Development, Excise, and Home (Civil Defence and Home Guards).
– Sosthenes Sohtun will manage Community and Rural Development, Secretariat Administration, and General Administration.
UDP leaders also scored big roles. Party president Metbah Lyngdoh now leads Power, Water Resources, Taxation, and Textiles. Lahkmen Rymbui grabs Education, Revenue and Disaster Management, Information and Public Relations, and Law.
BJP’s Sanbor Shullai will oversee Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Arts and Culture, Printing and Stationery, and Legal Metrology.
HSPDP’s Methodius Dkhar steps in for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Labour Employment and Skill, Registration and Stamps, and Cooperation.
The two Deputy Chief Ministers, Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, stick with their current duties. Tynsong keeps Home (Police), Public Works Department (Roads and Buildings), District Council Affairs, and Parliamentary Affairs. Dhar holds Urban Affairs, Transport, Commerce and Industries, and Prisons and Correctional Services.
Existing Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak stays on and adds Soil and Water Conservation to his plate, alongside Public Health Engineering (PHE) and Housing.
This Meghalaya Cabinet reshuffle wraps up Sangma’s plan to mix in more voices from different parties while keeping a firm grip on the state’s core operations. It sets the stage for smoother governance in the hilly northeast state.
