
The State Bank of India’s Rural Self‑Employment Training Institute (SBI‑RSETI) is turning the needle on gender gaps in Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir.
At a local training centre, 35 young women are learning professional tailoring skills for free. The programme covers everything from basic stitching to making A‑line kurtis, frocks, lehenga cholis and school uniforms. The goal is simple: give women the tools they need to start their own boutiques or work in local fashion businesses.
The training comes with a full support package. Participants receive free study materials, daily meals and accommodation, so money doesn’t become an obstacle. The 31‑day course also teaches business basics, helping trainees plan for self‑employment.
SBI‑RSETI’s director said the initiative is “more than a course—it’s a step toward self‑reliance.” Local women echo that sentiment. One trainee shared, “I’ve learned a lot about different designs, and the staff are very supportive. We have all the resources we need, and after the programme we’ll use our skills to earn a living.” Another added, “The free training has given me hope to start my own business.”
